Friends of Athlone Library

Friends of Athlone library was established in April of 1999. This young and dynamic group of library friends have shown an amazing commitment to Athlone Library and have done, and are about to do great things at the branch.

The first activity of friends has been to host booksales, portraiture and coffee mornings on Saturdays. These were held on a fortnightly basis throughout May and July. These culminated in having Saleem Mowzer as a guest and having his portrait done in our Music section.

We are fortunate to have amongst our friends the talented Athlone artist Alexander Smith, who will be co-ordinating a programme of brightening up our library with murals, to be done by art students and teachers from the area. Friends will also be painting various areas of the library bit by bit through donations of paint and purchases as a result of their fund-raising activities.

Friends will be soon hosting film shows, selling cloth library bags, selling bookmarkers, starting an internet club, the list is endless!!!

FOALie is a small reading animal which is the mascot and symbol of our Friends association. ....No it is not a donkey or zebra but is a Quagga.
